Being raised in South Africa and questioning my identity and its responsibilities throughout the subsequent years profoundly shaped my value system and inspired my academic journey. I hold a BSc in Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Previously I carried out qualitative research, embedded in postcolonial theory, on how young white South African Identity upholds Apartheid structures and how racial discrimination contributes to violence and crime. My dissertation is to centre around understanding the interconnectedness of organised urban criminal violence and poverty whilst critically investigating human-centred approaches to South African criminal justice and development policy.
