Dr. Mads Yding
I am a Carlsberg Foundation Visiting Fellow at Oxford University. Before coming to Oxford my doctoral research was undertaken at Aarhus University and was focused on local experiences of colonial and postcolonial development efforts in the Turkana area of Northwestern Kenya in the 20th century.
My previous studies include African Studies at the University of Copenhagen, International and Global History at Aarhus University, and visiting fellowships at the Department of Anthropology at Emory University, and the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History at the University of Oslo.
Research Interests
My research is focused on local experiences and histories, pastoral societies, development politics, and the agency of environments in shaping social and political patterns. I work in the intersection between history and historical anthropology. I have co-created multiple oral histories in the Turkana area and worked extensively with fishing communities along the western shores of Lake Turkana and cultivation communities along the Turkwel River.
Building on my previous research, the current project is an environmental and social history of the transformative agency of water in a rural resource-scarce setting, experiencing recurrent water crises, and extensive technology transfer and large-scale development.
