Prior to joining Oxford, Biraanu worked as a Research Consultant, including a role as a Research Analyst at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) in Nairobi. He contributed to a collaborative research project between the Africa Peace and Security Programme (APSP) and King’s College London’s African Leadership Centre (ALC); and co-authored a Peacebuilding Training Manual for IGAD and Ethiopia’s Ministry of Peace. He also contributed to the 10th Tana Forum on African Security.
Biraanu has presented his research at several international forums, including the 2022 International Conference on China-Africa Science and Technology Collaboration at the University of Pretoria, where his paper on food security is set to be published by Springer. He has also contributed to discussions on ethnic mobilization at the Wits Centre for Diversity Studies.
He holds a BA in Development Studies and an MA in Peace and Security Studies. He aspires to pursue a doctoral project at Oxford, focusing on political violence and regional security in the Horn of Africa. Passionate about contributing to peace and stability in Africa, his goal is to contribute to stability and peace in Ethiopia and the broader region through continued research and consultancy.
