African Studies Research Seminar: Extractives in Turkana, Kenya

This term’s African Studies seminar series focuses on activism and researching activism. In celebrating the continent’s rich experience of popular challenges to injustice, inequality and repression, the seminar will hear presentations from leading civic activists, speaking alongside academics who have researched political and social issues and activist challenges to them. As well as highlighting the diverse and changing foci of activism in Africa, the series will draw attention to the relationship between activist and academic work.

Our first seminar on 20 January, on ‘Extractives in Turkana, Kenya’, features environmental and political activist Ikal Angelei of Friends of Lake Turkana, winner of the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2012. She will speak alongside Dr Doris Okenwa, Evans-Pritchard Fellow in African Anthropology at the University of Oxford, whose research on the discovery of oil in Kenya is based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in Turkana County, the main site of oil exploration activities in the country.
