China and Angola: All weather friendship or strategic partnership?

Relations between China and Angola have for a long time been seen as a model for Africa’s relations with this global power. But was this really the case? This presentation analyses the extent to which China-Angola relations reflected State-to-State strategic imperatives, or were in fact "privatised", as well as assessing their real impacts in Angola. The paper will also gauge the evolution of this relationship to the present day situation.
Rui Verde holds a PhD in Law from the University of Newcastle, UK. Presently, he is a Research Associate at the African Studies Centre, University of Oxford, where he is working on the role of China in Angola. He is Chief-Legal Adviser of MakaAngola, an organisation that promotes democracy, human rights and fights corruption in Angola. He has written extensively about the country. He is a Member of Chatham House and also collaborates with the University of Johannesburg and the Institute of Indian Management-Research-Delhi.
